Day of Recollection

Do you feel called to greater union with God and a deeper experience of prayer? Join Br. John-Mary of Jesus Crucified (as seen on CarmelCast) and the Immaculate Heart of Mary OCDS community on March 29, 2025 for a day of recollection. We will explore the insights of two Carmelite saints, St. Teresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross, as we consider both the blessings and challenges of prayer.   • Br. John-Mary of Jesus Crucified was born and raised in Alabama, where he studied wireless engineering at Auburn University. He entered the Discalced Carmelites in 2015 and made his solemn vows in 2021. He studied Spiritual Theology at Boston College and the Catholic University of America, specializing in the teaching of St. John of the Cross. He shares the wisdom of the Carmelite saints in various ministries, especially through retreat work, spiritual direction, and the podcast CarmelCast. In his free time, he enjoys running, baking bread, playing the organ, and brewing beer.

  • The day of recollection will take place at the Quigley Pastoral Center (835 N. Rush St.), just blocks away from Holy Name Cathedral. Nearby public transportation options include the Red Line (exit at Chicago & State) and buses #36, 151, 147, and 146. For those driving, you may utilize the Archdiocese’s parking garage at 14 W. Superior St. under the One Chicago Square building (look for Lower Level One or Lower Level Two). Parking validation will be available at the Quigley Center after the day of recollection.

  • A continental breakfast will be provided at 9:45 a.m. and a boxed lunch will be provided at 12:00 p.m. If you have any specific dietary restrictions, please feel free to bring your own food if that is helpful!
